Because of a certain virus, the stunning landscapes and rich history of Ouray may require waiting until social distancing is no longer a thing. In the meantime, some interesting if perhaps not entirely useful facts about Ouray can help you learn a little more about it once the time comes to see it in person.

Remember the 2010 film True Grit? It’s an adaptation of the 1968 film of the same name. The original was shot in Ouray County and if you pay close attention you’ll even notice the Ouray County Court House showing up in the original film.

The novel Atlas Shrugged by Russian-American writer and philosopher features a protagonist whose secret hideaway he calls Mulligan’s Valley or “Galt’s Gulch” which is tucked away in a valley within the Rocky Mountains. The inspiration behind the hideaway is none other than Ouray.

If you remember the original 1985 MacGyver series, the main character’s grandfather Harry called Ouray his home. Speaking of Ouray, its scenery was in full display during the “Target MacGyver” episode.

His place of birth was Kansas City, but famous baseball pitcher Howard Ellsworth “Smoky Joe” Wood spent his days in Ouray. Smoky Joe played for teams like the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians.
