A Piece of History Soars Above Ouray

Have you stopped to notice the “Box Canon” sign standing near Ouray? The iconic sign that has towered over Ouray for years since the early 1900s received a significant facelift not too long ago after a team of five individuals took it upon themselves to spruce it up and bring the sign back to its full glory.

Today, the Box Canon sign features all new fortification comprised of steel plus a fresh coat of paint and plenty of LED light bulbs that are also environmentally friendly and powered by sunlight. As with Ouray itself, the sign has a rich history. Conceived by Mayor Charles A. Sperber, it is believed to be among the first electrically powered marquee signs in the entire state and it’s believed to have existed for over a decade before the famous Hollywood sign in California developed its infamy in the 1920s..

Here is another fun fact: before it was called “Box Canon”, the sign was originally called “Box Cafton”. There was also much debate over the lack of a tilde above the letter n to indicate its name of “Box Canyon”.

The sign is definitely worth admiring and yet another reason why you should visit Ouray. To read more about it, visithttps://www.telluridenews.com/the_watch/the_lead/article_2bf077a8-87ec-11e9-8733-73dd253565ee.html.
