All Eyes Are on Ouray Ice Park

It normally means the Ouray Ice Park is getting ready to open its doors again when the temperatures in Ouray decrease. With this long-standing, free attraction that attracts novice and experienced ice climbers from different parts of the world, you may have heard about it at some point. Last year, 25 years of entertaining locals and visitors were celebrated in the park and it’s tentatively poised to celebrate another opening on December 19. Before heading off to this longtime local favorite, there are few items worth learning for those excited to explore Ouray Ice Park.

Usually, the gear required to go ice climbing in the park is not supplied, so you may need to carry some of the basics. Local guides can be found nearby, though, which will prove useful in helping you to understand which climbing areas are ideally tailored to your ice climbing skill level.

Even with its 20+ years of existence, you may be surprised to learn that Ouray Ice Park is always a different experience. Thanks to the efforts of longtime ice farmers and the generosity of volunteers, these people collectively create the ice flows that subsequently turn into the climbing walls you’ll get to attempt at Ouray Ice Park. Each year you visit, the climb will never be the same.
