Best Hiking Clothes for Colorado

Chances are, if you’re coming to Colorado, you’ll be hiking. Ouray Colorado and the surrounding areas have beautiful trails that you can try out this summer. You’ll get stunning views from the mountains of wildflowers, the greenest trees, and you might even spot some wildlife! If hiking is on the agenda while staying at Ouray Colorado lodging, check out these tips for what to pack.

Essentials:

  • Sun protection: the sun will be more intense at higher altitudes! Bring sunglasses and sunscreen.

  • First-aid kit: make sure you leave room in your backpack for this. You never know when you’ll need it.

  • Bug spray

  • Extra snacks and water

  • A map: some trails will have these available to you, especially if you are hiking in a state park. Carry this with you at all times, you will need it.

Clothes:

  • Synthetic fabric for both tops and bottoms to keep you insulated where necessary (it can get colder the higher you go up, even in the summer!)

  • A jacket or sweater

  • A waterproof and windproof jacket

  • PRO TIP: Don’t wear denim or cotton. Synthetic fabric breathes much better and dries faster.

Miscellaneous:

  • Waterproof ground blanket or cloth: so you can sit down and enjoy a snack or meal without ruining your clothes and feeling uncomfortable for the rest of the hike from the ground.

  • Plastic bags for trash: always take your trash! We want to keep the beautiful nature near our Ouray Colorado lodging location clean and habitable for the many species that call it home.

  • Binoculars: there are many species of birds around, and you’ll be able to see miles away from where you can’t hike to.

  • Trekking poles: use these for balance and to help you navigate the rocky paths.
