There is probably no greater type of adventure than gently floating in the sky in a hot air balloon. Fortunately, that is a reality in the nearby town of Ridgway, just a fifteen-minute drive from Ouray. It’s a family-owned business called San Juan Balloon Adventures run by Gary and Carolyn Woods for 22 years. Now that we’re in May (the beginning of the balloon season), you can do so from now until September, but only with advanced reservation. The flight lasts one hour, it can carry up to four adults, and takes you over breathtaking sights such as the Ridgway valley, San Juan Mountains, Uncompaghre River, and large open pastures.
If you’re feeling apprehensive about floating in the air in a hot air balloon, there is no reason to be. Ballooning is one of the safest forms of travel, and all pilots and equipment are regulated and certified by the Federal Aviation Administration.
