Go for a Ride on the RAT

coloradoBikeWith the arrival of spring, it is a wonderful time to think about taking a bike trip around the San Juan Mountains while exploring the assorted natural landscapes that encircle Ouray. The dirt roads make for an exciting method of exploring some of the not so frequently traveled paths while enjoying a satisfying trip and soaking in the atmosphere.

Perhaps the most surefire way to get started with biking in Colorado is by exploring the intricate yet comprehensive Ridgway Area Trail (RAT) System. Created back in 2004, the trail is comprised of fantastically fun rides which include navigating through the foot of Mount Sneffels, the Dallas Creek Trail, Highway 550, and plenty of other exciting sights. What’s more, several different routes can be embarked upon based on your level of biking expertise and how long of a bike ride you have time for.

Intense yet short, the Portland Trail consists of a mere four miles long but the ride will take a pair of hours to complete. For a longer ride, the Dallas Creek Loops is a good choice or you can go with the Imogene Pass / Last Dollar Road Loop if you’re a highly experienced biker. The River Road, Ouray to Ridgway & Back is simple and wonderfully scenic, winding you through beauteous ranch lands and arresting cliffside vistas.
