By now you’re likely very well aware of the notoriety attached to Red Mountain Pass. This treacherous roadway has earned a reputation for its excitement and danger during the summer, and it’s even more challenging during the winter season. The pass connects Ouray to its neighbor Silverton and can be found at more than 10,500 feet of elevation.
Because of frequent avalanches and rock slides, Red Mountain Pass always has a possibility to close. In fact, it was indeed closed last month due to a snow slide. It took a team of dedicated individuals to clear out more than sixty feet of snow and debris to ensure the road was once again safe for people to travel through. The process was no simple matter as Red Mountain Pass doesn’t have guardrails to increase safety.
