Sledding in Ouray

Winter is in full swing here in Ouray. With a Colorado winter comes plenty of fun winter sports – something our state is known best for! With the mountains and hills surrounding our Ouray Colorado lodging location, you won’t be hard-pressed to find something to do during your stay.

One of Ouray’s favorite pastimes? Sledding! It offers a more laid-back yet still exciting way for the whole family to get in on the winter sports fun. At Vinegar Hill (also known as Sledding Hill), you can enjoy all the fun sledding in Colorado has to offer.

The famous sledding hill got its name from the abundance of families in the area making “vinegar” during the 1920s prohibition.

For over a century, our town has reserved an entire block (between 5th and 6th avenues) to provide everyone the opportunity to sled. The north-facing hill is closed to vehicle traffic, but sleds, toboggans, and tubes are welcome!

Enjoy sledding during your stay at Ouray Colorado lodging from mid-December to early March (however, hours and days open will greatly depend on the winter weather that season). You are welcome to bring your own sleds.

Make sure you stay warm and bundled up! Wear thermal base layers with waterproof coverings, and don’t forget to layer up underneath wool or fleece fabric. Add in gloves and hats for an extra layer of protection. Snow pants are best, but if you don’t have any wind pants, rain pants or fishing waders are great alternatives. Ideally, you want to layer up in waterproof gear!
