The Benefits of a Deep Tissue Massage

Often times massages and spa treatments are categorized as “something you do for pleasure”. Most people can’t take time out of their day to visit a spa or get a massage. Though these treatments can leave you feeling luxurious and brand new, many don’t know that these treatments are extremely beneficial to the body.

A deep tissue massage is a technique or practice used to alleviate pain and discomfort throughout areas of the body. This form of massage therapy is commonly performed on a stiff neck, any contracted area on the back, legs, and on sore shoulders. It involves applying firm pressure and using slow strokes to reach deeper layers of the muscle and the connective tissue surrounding the muscle, known as fascia.

So what can you expect when getting a deep tissue massage? Pressure.

Though some may be reluctant to add more pressure to an aching muscle it is actually the best way to reduce pain and break down knots. The techniques are implemented specifically to allow one to regain circulation, reduce inflammation, and gain back range of motion in the disrupted area.

Massage therapists will often use their hands, elbows, knuckles, and thumbs to create the gliding pressure. It is recommended that your masseuse begins with a warm-up technique to prepare the muscles.

Deep tissue massages are not meant to be painful, though at times you may feel discomfort. If you feel extreme pain, it’s best to let your massage therapist know because it can lead to your muscles tensing up further.

Some find the pressure applied to feel gratifying and relaxing, while others may find it unsettling. But both can agree that the results of a deep tissue massage are both satisfying and worth it.
