Ouray’s natural beauty and spectacular mountain views spurred its rise in popularity. Visiting a hot springs, going skiing or ice climbing all have become popular tourist attractions in recent years. Even so, Ouray has never lost its history, as evidenced by the numerous museum and historic site visits available.
Due to its enormous collection of medical and pharmaceutical products going back to 350 BC, the Ouray Alchemist Museum is one of Ouray’s most popular tourist spots. The focus of the museum is on pharmacy-related artifacts from Colorado’s wild west, including a replica of a frontier pharmacy and some of Colorado’s oldest prescriptions. Over 700 hand-blown pharmacy bottles are on display in the museum, many of which still contain the original medicines. Appointments are required to see the museum owing to restricted capacity. It also has a gift shop with antiques, t-shirts, art, jewelry and over-the-counter medicinal goods.
If you enjoy history and museums, consider taking the Ouray walking tour to view the Prevost home, the Jeffers building and the Columbus building. These structures, which line Ouray’s main street, were all built in the 1800s. All of them have been restored to their previous grandeur and continue to stand. They document Ouray’s rich and lively history, as well as its importance in the mining sector of the region.
