The Town of Ridgway is located less than twenty minutes away to the northwest of Twin Peaks Lodge & Hot Springs. The former railroad stop is nestled along the Uncompaghre River in the San Juan Mountains and has a rich history. In fact, it served as the backdrop for John Wayne’s 1969 western movie True Grit.
If you’re the adventurous type or something of a nature aficionado, Ridgway is something of a nature lover’s paradise, with sprawling lakes, fascinating wildlife, trails, and plenty of lush beauty to explore. It’s also popular for fishing and water sports.
Although it’s known for its many nature-skewed activities, Ridgway also offers something for those seeking some arts and culture. The Sherbino Theater is located in the heart of Ridgway and seeks to promote excellence and the teaching of arts. The theater frequently hosts live musical events, film screenings, poetry, lectures, art shows, and many other special events. Today, for example, the Sherbino will be hosting a Day of the Dead celebration beginning at 5pm. The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday honoring family and friends that have passed away and helping them through their spiritual journey.
