Are you a fan of cycling? If so, now is the time to start training for the 35th edition of the popular Ride the Rockies bicycle tour. The event is returning to the southwest Colorado area for the first time since 2017 and will see riders travel from Durango through several towns, including our own Ouray. The entire ride takes place over six days and encompasses nearly 420 miles.
Those willing to brave the Ride the Rockies tour will climb more than 28,000 feet of elevation. This year’s ride is aimed at showcasing some of Colorado’s rural areas as they travel on pavement and the occasional packed dirt roads. It should also be a much smoother experience after snow caused last year’s event to experience logistical challenges.
Should six days and 400+ miles seem a little daunting, the routes will include smaller loops that begin and end in the same city, potentially making it easier for novice riders to enjoy the trip.
Ride the Rockies began in the late 1980s. It draws thousands of participants each year spanning a broad age range and many different countries beyond the United States. The money raised goes to The Denver Post Community Foundation, which then donates the funds to various Colorado-based nonprofits.
