Barring unforeseen circumstances, the highly anticipated Ouray Via Ferrata is setting its sights on opening to the public this Memorial Day weekend. This opening will add yet another alfresco recreational experience to Ouray’s already expansive list of activities.
The Friends of the Ouray Via Ferrata nonprofit will be kicking things off by offering early access as well as complimentary guides for Ouray locals before the official opening of the via ferrata. Future visitors will find it in the Uncompahgre Gorge. Although it is open to anyone that wants to experience it, those that have never experienced such activity are urged to consider a guide.
Ouray Via Ferrata is comprised of more than 3,5000 linear feet and it also features bridge extending 35 feet near the entrance comprised of a single cable intended to be walked on like that of a tightrope. A pair of hand cables provide additional support. There is also another bridge over 65 feet long called the Skystair comprised of four cables.
Those concerned about maintaining social distancing can breathe a sigh of relief. As spacing is limited to a single climber per anchored sable section, there is little risk of being too close to someone else.
