Discover Ouray and Colorado at These Museums

ouray2k17With so much history in its roots, Ouray is fascinating. If you aren’t up for exploring some of the remote ghost towns nestled up high in the mountains, there are plenty of museums to explore which we’ll acquaint you with.

None other than The Smithsonian Institution dubbed the Ouray County Historical Museum “one of the best little museums in the West.” For those of you that want a rich yet succinct glimpse into the mountain community’s history, this is the place to go. Built way back in the late 1800s, the museum was formerly known as St. Joseph’s Miners’ Hospital. Today, it is comprised of a trio of floors and over twenty rooms packed with a number of exhibits worth checking out. Check out the mineral collection, admire the photographs, it may be small but the Ouray County Historical Museum will definitely leave you with a grasp of how it came to be.

For something a little more unusual, the Ouray Alchemist Pharmaceutical Museum has been around for more than four decades and it houses over 1,500 years of pharmaceutical history, from remedies to the oldest prescription in the entire state of Colorado.

The Ute Indian tribe has strong ties to Colorado, and you probably won’t find a place with more history about them than the Ute Indian Museum. In fact, the museum is found on the homestead that once belonged to the tribe’s leader Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta.
