Ouray, Colorado is packed with historic sights, and the Ouray County Courthouse one of its most historic and iconic. This building has been around since the late 1800s and it even made an appearance in the classic 1969 western True Grit, starring John Wayne.
If you’ve passed by the Ouray County Courthouse lately, you may have noticed some construction work going on. The courthouse is currently in the middle of some work that will restore the building and bring it closer in line to the 21st without sacrificing any of its historic charm. Some of the work involved will focus on improving the courthouse foundation, restoring the brick exterior, and improvements to the landscaping and sidewalk.
When it was originally completed in December 1888, the Ouray County Courthouse cost just over $20,000, which is roughly $600,000+ today when adjusted for inflation. Many of the classic furnishings that were used back in those days are still being used today including vaults, desks, and safes.
If all goes according to plan, work on the Ouray County Courthouse is expected to be complete in March of next year.
