Visit the Ouray Alchemist Museum

Aside from its hot springs at Ouray lodging and beautiful trails, Ouray is perhaps most well known for its wide array of interesting museums. One of the most popular ones you can visit by appointment is the Ouray Alchemist Museum, filled with a collection of medical and pharmaceutical products that go as far back as 350 B.C. The museum’s main focus is the time period of the Wild West and other Colorado-pharmacy items. There is even a full replica of a frontier drugstore with some of the oldest prescriptions in the state.

The Ouray Alchemist Museum sits behind the old Aspen Drug Store, built in 1888, and has been collecting items for over 50 years. The owners are pharmacists (and the proud curators, having hand-selected each item!) have a passion for sharing the old days of the medical world with all those who come to Ouray. You can visit the museum any time during the summer by appointment only since there is limited space. They ask that you call ahead rather than walking in and expect about two hours for a complete tour. Admission is $10 per person.

While you are there, check out the storefront gift store, where you can purchase antiques, shirts, art, jewelry, antique-inspired candy, and over-the-counter pharmacy items. Walking in is truly like taking a trip back to the old days of the Wild West.
