Even if you have only a limited knowledge of the Western film genre, you probably know the name John Wayne. The actor, producer, director, and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom became synonymous with the genre. Despite his many films and acting talents, however, there was only one that would earn him an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1969. That film was the classic True Grit.
With its elements of revenge, murder, robbery, and a memorable cast of characters like Rooster Cogburn, True Grit became a well-known film. Based on the 1968 novel of the same name, the film was again adapted back in 2010, once again earning awards and accolades.
If you’ve watched the original True Grit, one of the scenes involves a courthouse. That courthouse is none other than the Ouray County Courthouse which is still an iconic part of Ouray to this day since it was built way back in 1888. It’s one of the many facets that contribute to Ouray’s unbelievably rich history and another reason why you may wish to visit once it’s safe to do so.
