Pop Culture and Ouray

Ouray’s beauty and elegance has charmed many people across the world. So it’s no surprise that many interesting films and books are based in or off of Ouray. Here are a couple interesting pop culture references about Ouray.

Ayn Rand was a famous philosopher and author. She spent some time in Ouray, where she finished her novel Atlas Shrugged. In it, her main character’s secret hideaway is called “Galt’s Gulch” and is in the Rocky Mountains. “Galt’s Gulch” is fictional, but she based it off of Ouray.

True Grit is a famous western film that people still watch today, even though it was originally filmed in 1969. John Wayne stars in it, and he won his only Academy Award for his performance. Some parts of this movie were filmed in Ouray. One area they filmed in was the Ouray County Court House for some scenes.

The 1985 TV show MacGyver was an action show about a hero who outwits his enemies in astonishing ways. Ouray appears in one of the episodes as the home of MacGyver’s grandfather Harry. The episode was also filmed in Ouray.

Ouray has definitely left its mark on pop culture, and it will continue to do so for a long time.
