Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla cemented his place in history thanks to his groundbreaking work in creating new styles of tango which borrowed influences from genres like classical music and jazz. His work was so acclaimed, one music critic dubbed him “the world’s foremost composer of tango music”, according to his Wikipedia article.
Piazzolla passed away in 1992 but his musical contributions and influence inspired the creation of the Austin Piazzolla Quintet (APQ), a musical group founded by violinist James Anderson. Together with several other members from diverse musical backgrounds, the band has become quite famous for its live shows which consist of intense performances fusing the work of Piazzolla with unique arrangements, improvisation, and original compositions to create spellbinding performances. Their debut album Libertango was released in 2010 to critical acclaim while their sophomore effort Lo Que Vendra has also been warmly received.
If you’ve never seen an APQ performance, prepare to be enraptured! The band is coming to Ouray’s Wright Opera House this Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 pm as part of the third annual Dave and Mary Wood Classical Concert Series.
