During your stay at the Twins Peaks Lodge & Hot Springs, the scenery will always remain fascinating, and that may be due in part to the amazing San Juan Mountains. For those that have never been to Ouray or Colorado, we’d like to tell you a little more about this incredible mountain range.
The San Juan Mountains make up a portion of Colorado’s famous Rocky Mountains. Many decades ago, miners spent a great deal of time in the mountains looking for gold and silver. Mining is no longer quite as popular, but Smuggler Union and Camp Bird are two mining sites you can still visit to this day that offer a glimpse of the area’s unbelievably rich history.
Tourism is a major industry in the San Juan Mountains. Silverton and Durango’s narrow gauge railway is a historic site that sees lots of activity in the summer, and Jeeping fans will find numerous trails that offer a challenge. These trails wind through old mining towns and ghost towns that are as spooky as they are fascinating. Trekking the wilderness, climbing the mountains, skiing, the San Juan Mountains hold many secrets yet there’s a wealth of activities to see, discover, and do.
Here’s an interesting piece of trivia you can bring up in a conversation: Telluride Airport is nestled in the San Juan Mountains, making it the airport with the highest elevation in the United States at a little over 9,000 feet.
