Join us as we take a trip to Ouray’s rich past to learn more about one of its most iconic sights: the Wright Opera House. To this very day, the building remains in Ouray and can be identified by visiting famous Main Street.
The history of The Wright Opera House extends about as far back as the late 1800s. The Wright siblings used their money to buy multiple lots near Main Street. After the Wright Brothers Tower was built, the brothers focused their efforts on enhancing the cultural attractions of Ouray, to turn the slightly sleazy image of Ouray into one that kids and adults could value, savor and possibly learn a thing or two from. With this impetus, the initial plans for the Wright Opera House were soon to come to fruition.
Wright Opera House welcomed visitors for the first time on the 4th of December 1888. So late as the 1890s, alongside the Ouray County Court House and the Beaumont Hotel, it held a then highly impressive architectural allure. Notwithstanding its grandeur, the Wright Opera House remained semi-dormant for years until the mining boom began to wind down, raising the occupancy dramatically.
Today, the Wright Opera House is frequently visited by tourists and it has the distinction of being on the United States National Register of Historic Places.
