The Thrill of Backpacking in Colorado

Have you ever gone backpacking? This low cost independent travel is a great way to discover new sights and meet new people versus a conventional trip while also learning more about unfamiliar areas. Today’s modern interpretation of backpacking has some of its roots largely in the 60s and 70s when the hippie subculture was quite popular.

If you’re planning on doing something backpacking in Ouray, the natural sights and the rich history are great for discovering something new. Among the best backpacking experiences is Bear Creek National Recreation Trail which winds beyond once active mines and camps, and takes backpackers through lushly elegant fields of wildflowers and before climbing along a rock shelf with a sheer drop-off just a couple of feet away.

Make sure to bring some camping gear prior to reaching Engineer Pass, which is found roughly seven miles up the trail. This region is practically begging to be explored and is also great for snapping some memorable photos during your backpacking trip.

To reach Bear Creek National Recreation Trail from Ouray, drive just over two miles south on U.S. 550 to where the road passes through a small tunnel. The head of the trail is located on the western side of the road directly beyond the tunnel and is easily noticeable.
