Depending on how long you’ve been reading our blog posts, you may have noticed and enjoyed some of the ones we did focusing on the wildlife. Today we’re focusing on another one of the animals that roams the landscapes, one that you may have come across before stay at home orders became a thing.
Of all the American sparrow species, the beautifully named song sparrow is among the most abundant. It is easily noticeable by the dark and white streaks and the brown color. Despite their prevalence, they vary wildly in size, from just over four inches to as tall as 7.1 inches. Their lifespan is typically around eleven years or so and they prefer to hang out in marshes and brushlands, but it’s not unusual to also spot them in the suburbs or on the roadside.
As for the name of the bird, the song sparrow is indeed something of a tunesmith, with a surprisingly large repertoire of songs that supposedly includes names like Beethoven. While amusing, the songs are also used for practical purposes. Males, for example, will belt out a tune to draw the attention of females as well as inform others the territory belongs to them. Fascinatingly, the song sparrow can learn as many as twenty different songs and they learn them from listening to their neighbors.
