The Wright Opera House

The Wright Opera House is an Ouray staple, celebrating 132 years of entertainment. Built in 1888 by the Wright family, its original intention was to balance the town’s mining culture with performance art, designed to be the center of entertainment for the entire county. In 1983, the building was put on the National Register of Historic Places. However, in 2006, the Wright Opera House, located near Ouray Colorado lodging, closed its doors.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the end of its story. In 2007, a group of volunteers came together to save the Wright Opera House, and in 2008, the “Friends of the Wright” organization was formed, bringing restoration and the ability for future use back to the center.

Today, the Wright Opera House is a movie house and performing arts venue with rentable property for special events, private events, weddings, parties, and meetings. They also frequently host education lectures on a wide range of topics. This fall, they will cover SPACE, bringing in special guests to discuss what being an astronaut is all about, space rock, and space weather.

You can support the Wright Opera House through online donations. Donations will go to renovating the space, including new sound, lighting, and video equipment, along with the necessary infrastructure to support events. The center also plans on working on the Mesker facade, lobby, stairs, concession area, backstage area, and other renovations and updates throughout the theatre.

You can view a full list of music, movies, and theatre events on their online events calendar. Next time you are staying at our Ouray Colorado lodging location, be sure to check out the Wright Opera House!
