As things have been heating up, summer sports are getting started in Ouray. With the increased temperatures, snow melt from the San Juan Mountains flows down into the Uncompahgre River and the Animas River, creating ideal conditions for rafters and kayakers alike. Both rivers have multiple sections for both seasoned veterans and beginners. If you are just starting out or don’t own your own gear, you can just stop by the RIGS Whitewater store, just ten minutes away from the Twin Peaks Ouray Colorado lodging location.
With the increased heat, the ice is finally melting off of Ouray’s rock climbing cliffs. Although Ouray is known more for its ice climbing, recently it has gained some reputation for its summer rock climbing spots. Some of these such as the Rotary Park are great for families, with easy routes and a nice picnic spot under a patch of huge cottonwood trees. Another great climbing spot is The Pool Wall located just east of the Ouray Springs Pool. These steep rock cliffs are great for beginners and experienced climbers with routes ranging from 5.5 – 5.13+.
