For those that have never been to Ouray, it’s located just over 170 miles away from Denver, roughly a six hour drive. Referred to as the “Switzerland of America”, Ouray is nestled among majestic, towering mountains that are draped with an eye-catching blanket of snow during the winter. It is considered incredibly picturesque!
Besides its scenic backdrops, Ouray is also known for its fantastic ice climbing activities. In fact, Ouray frequently plays host to various international ice climbing competitions, which is not quite as intimidating as it may sound for beginners. While it takes practice to develop a certain rhythm with the ice axe and toe pick, there are many safety precautions in place as well as meticulous training given before scaling the ice. You’ll be harnessed in various safety equipment and you’ll be given the necessary tools. Simply find a reputable, experienced guide and you’ll be all set to experience something exhilarating and new.
Working with an ice climbing guide may be expensive, but the experience as you get higher and higher up the ice is one that you’ll likely remember for the rest of your life.
