Colorado features over forty different mountains soaring over 14,000 feet into the skyline. These summits are commonly referred to as “fourteeners” and they are especially popular spots to visit during the summer and fall season. If you’re thinking about taking on a “14er” sometime during your Twin Peaks Lodge & Hot Springs stay, there are several worth your time.
Let’s begin with one that’s just outside Ouray: Mount Sneffels which travels through Yankee Boy Basin. When you reach the summit at 14,150 feet, you’ll likely be enchanted by the spectacular vistas of the marmots, wildflowers, and alpine lakes. The trip is just over two miles roundtrip if you begin at the upper trailhead or six miles should you opt to begin at the restroom parking section. However, do be aware that this route is considered a Class 3 climb and is therefore not intended for beginners.
For those seeking a 14er that’s not quite as difficult as Mount Sneffels, Mount Sherman is another short route. For those starting at the 12,000-foot entrance, it’s a little over five miles round-trip. The rough climb is very steep and reaches an elevation of around 2,100 feet. The trail crosses what’s left of the Hilltop Mine. Admire the gorgeous vistas and be sure to keep an eye out for mountain goats.
