What Exactly Is a Hot Spring?

hotSpringOn this Friday, we’re switching things up and becoming a tad scientific. Have you ever wondered just what a hot spring is? Here’s a bit of a primer to give you a very basic understanding.

Hot springs occur when geothermally heated groundwater emerges from the crust of the Earth. While some of these springs are hot enough to enjoy a sizzling soak (i.e.: the ones found at Twins Peaks Lodge & Hot Springs), there are others that are actually too hot for humans.

Interestingly, there is no universal definition for a hot spring as it can be defined in a number of different ways: a thermal spring, a natural spring, a natural discharge of water, you can probably stick to whichever definition is most suitable for that particular hot spring. There are also “warm springs”, but these are considered to be less intense in terms of temperature, as the name suggests.

Hot springs are capable of holding onto a greater number of dissolved solids than cold water. Because of this, hot springs are packed with a number of minerals, calcium being one example. There are those who believe that these minerals can result in therapeutic uses, which has made them very popular as tourist attractions or rehabilitation sites.
